Desalination Pumps Market Analysis by Size, Share, Growth, Trends, 2026
Market Overview
Based on recent data from the World Resources Institute
(WRI), approximately 25% of the global population is currently facing a water
crisis. As of 2019, seventeen countries worldwide are experiencing
"extremely high" levels of baseline water stress. To meet the demand
for clean water in the face of population growth and various sectors, such as
agriculture, desalination has emerged as a viable solution. Desalination
involves the removal of salts and minerals from saline water, which can be
achieved through various methods such as traditional distillation, vacuum
distillation, multi-stage flash distillation, multiple effect distillation,
vapor-compression distillation, reverse osmosis, and other techniques.
Desalination pumps play a crucial role in maintaining proper flow during these
processes, ensuring the supply of potable and clean water. Desalination pumps
are primarily used in desalination plants and can be categorized into two
types: centrifugal pumps and positive displacement pumps. The choice of pump
depends on the plant's capacity, with positive displacement pumps being used in
small capacity plants and centrifugal pumps in large capacity plants. Positive
displacement pumps can further be classified as reciprocating (piston,
diaphragm) pumps and rotary pumps, while centrifugal pumps include single-stage
pumps, multi-stage pumps, axial and mixed flow pumps, submersible pumps, and
sealless and circular pumps.

The need for clean and potable water has become a significant
concern in developing countries, leading governments to initiate water
recycling and seawater desalination projects. This factor is a major driver for
the desalination market. Additionally, there is a growing demand for intelligent
pump systems capable of regulating water flow and pressure, adjusting
automatically to changes in the desalination process. This demand is fueling
the growth of the desalination pumps market. The refurbishment of desalination
plants and pumps, along with the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and
procedures, are also contributing to market growth.
However, desalination processes consume significant amounts
of energy, making desalinating seawater more expensive compared to treating
freshwater from rivers, groundwater, recycled water, or other conservation
sources. Despite these challenges, alternative sources are not always feasible,
and the depletion of reserves remains a critical concern globally. These
factors may hinder the growth of the desalination pumps market in the future.
Fluctuating raw material prices are another factor that can slow down market
growth. The widespread implementation of newer desalination processes like
reverse osmosis and solar desalination will play a crucial role in the market's
development. An example of solar desalination is the Solar-powered desalination
plant constructed by GivePower in 2019. The plant, built for $500,000, can
provide 75,000 liters of fresh drinking water per day, enough for 25,000
people. This system utilizes a smaller pump and consumes less power. Hayes
Barnard, Founder and President of GivePower, stated that modular-style solar
desalination units with a single pump and a 15-kilowatt solar grid, including
three Tesla batteries, are expected in the future.
The Middle East and Africa currently dominate the global
desalination pumps market. Government initiatives to increase production
capacity and growing investments are driving market growth in these regions.
North America is the second-largest market, followed by Europe. In the Asia
Pacific, China holds the largest market share in terms of production and sales.
Chinese manufacturers offer approximately 30% lower prices compared to key
manufacturers in other regions, contributing to significant growth during the
forecast period. Overall, the desalination pumps market and the demand for
clean water are expected to steadily increase in the coming years.
